A Northern Beaches handyman typically fixes rusted hinges and latches, sticking sliding doors, loose deck boards, gates, screens and small repairs in units and houses. Choose marine-grade stainless fixings near the water, and remember that in NSW electrical, plumbing and gas work always needs a licensed trade, and building work over $5,000 incl. GST needs a contractor licence.
What salt, sand and slopes do to Northern Beaches homes
Close to the surf at Manly, Curl Curl, Dee Why, Collaroy and Avalon, salt air eats into ordinary zinc-plated screws, hinges, gate latches, screen door closers and clothesline fittings. A common handyman job is simply replacing rusted hardware with marine-grade stainless steel so the repair lasts.
Sand is the other enemy. Sliding door and screen tracks clog, rollers wear out and doors start to drag, especially in beachside units and homes with an outdoor shower near the back door. Cleaning the track and fitting new rollers is a routine fix.
Up the peninsula in Mona Vale, Newport and Avalon, weatherboard and timber homes on steep, bushy blocks have outdoor stairs, timber decks, gates and handrails that take a beating from rain and leaf litter. Loose boards, popped nails, wobbly handrails and gates that no longer latch are all regular requests. Inland in Frenchs Forest, Belrose and Terrey Hills, 1960s to 80s brick-veneer homes have the usual list of doors, plaster and fittings.
The beachside unit blocks in Dee Why, Manly and Collaroy add strata rules, building access and limited parking, particularly on summer weekends.

Council, licences and safety on the Beaches
Northern Beaches Council covers the whole region. Everyday handyman repairs don't need council approval. It comes into play when a job grows, for example replacing a deck, adding a pergola or building on land mapped as bushfire-prone, which covers much of Frenchs Forest, Belrose, Terrey Hills and the bushy edges of Avalon and Newport.
In NSW, residential building work worth more than $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence, and electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas and air-con work needs a licence at any value. Our handyman licence guide explains where the line sits.
A loose handrail or balustrade on a steep Northern Beaches stair or deck is a fall risk, not a cosmetic job. Where a fall is more than one metre, the building code generally requires a balustrade at least one metre high. Small fixes are fine for a handyman, but rotten posts, failed fixings or a rebuild should go to a licensed carpenter.
What to tell the crew when you ask for quotes
List every job with a photo, and note how close you are to the beach, because that changes the hardware a good handyman will bring. Describe access: a steep driveway, stairs from the street, or a unit with lift and parking rules. Mention any timber that feels soft.
We don't publish local prices. Our handyman rates guide covers what Sydney handymen charge, and the main handyman services page has a scope checklist. For bigger projects, see trades on the Northern Beaches. When you're ready, describe the job to MyTradeCrew and we'll send it to up to three vetted local trades from our crew, who quote you directly.
Common questions
Why do screws and hinges rust so fast near the beach?
Salt spray settles on metal and keeps it damp, which speeds up corrosion, especially on cheap zinc-plated hardware. Near the surf, ask for marine-grade (316) stainless steel hinges, screws and latches, and avoid mixing metals that react with each other. It costs a little more up front but saves repeat call-outs.
Can a handyman fix my deck?
For small jobs, yes: re-fixing loose boards, replacing a few boards, tightening a handrail or oiling. If boards are soft, joists or bearers are rotten, or the deck moves when you walk on it, you need a carpenter or deck builder. Work over $5,000 including GST also needs a contractor licence in NSW.
Will a steep block or stairs change the quote?
It can. Carrying tools and materials up long stairs or a steep driveway takes time, and some jobs need extra ladders or two people. Describe the access when you send the job, with a photo from the street if you can, so each quote allows for it and nobody is surprised on the day.
Does a handyman need a licence on the Northern Beaches?
Not for most odd jobs. In NSW a contractor licence is needed for residential building work worth more than $5,000 including GST, and electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas and air-con work needs a licence at any value. Ask for proof of public liability insurance and check any licence on the NSW Government licence check.
