A handyman on the North Shore usually handles small repairs, fixtures, doors, patching and flat-pack in houses and apartments. In strata buildings, hanging pictures is cosmetic work that needs no approval, but hard floors and bigger changes do, and electrical, plumbing and gas work always needs a licensed trade in NSW.
What North Shore homes need from a handyman
The lower North Shore is apartment country. North Sydney, Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Crows Nest, St Leonards, Chatswood and Lane Cove have everything from 1960s walk-ups to new towers. Typical jobs are moving-in and maintenance tasks: TV mounts, shelving, curtain tracks, door closers, wardrobe doors off their tracks, and resealing showers and kitchen benches.
Between the apartment blocks, Federation and interwar homes in Mosman, Cremorne, Lane Cove and Willoughby have timber windows that stick, plaster ceilings with cracks, picture rails and doors that need easing. Many sit on sloping blocks with outdoor stairs, gates and retaining walls.
On the upper North Shore, Pymble, Turramurra, Wahroonga and Hornsby have larger family homes on leafy blocks. Big trees mean gutters fill fast, gates and fences get pushed by roots, and shaded timber stays damp, so loose deck boards and sticking gates are frequent requests.

Councils, strata buildings and parking
Six councils cover the North Shore: North Sydney, Willoughby (Chatswood), Lane Cove, Mosman, Ku-ring-gai (Pymble, Turramurra, Wahroonga) and Hornsby Shire. Handyman repairs don't need council approval, but all of them have tree protection rules, so pruning or removing a tree to fix a fence or deck may need a permit.
In apartments, NSW strata law sorts work into cosmetic work (no approval, such as hooks, nails and screws for hanging pictures), minor renovations (an ordinary resolution, such as hard floors or a kitchen refit) and major renovations (a special resolution, such as anything changing waterproofing). Most buildings also have by-laws on working hours, lift protection and contractor insurance.
Parking is tight across the lower North Shore, with meters, time limits and permit zones near the stations. Tell the crew where a van can stop or whether there's a visitor space.
In NSW, residential building work worth more than $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence, and electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas and air-con work needs a licence at any value. If your building manager asks for a licence or insurance certificate, ask the trade for it before the visit. Our handyman licence guide explains the rules.
What to tell the crew when you ask for quotes
Send a numbered list with photos, and say whether it's a house or apartment, which suburb, and any building rules: lift booking, working hours, loading dock or parking. For older homes, mention sloping access or stairs from the street.
We don't publish local prices. Our handyman rates guide covers what Sydney handymen charge, and the main handyman services page has a scope checklist. For other jobs, see trades on the North Shore. When you're ready, describe the job to MyTradeCrew and we'll send it to up to three vetted local trades from our crew, who quote you directly.
Common questions
Do you have handymen on the lower North Shore?
MyTradeCrew sends your job to vetted trades from our crew who cover your postcode, including North Sydney, Mosman, Neutral Bay, Crows Nest, Lane Cove and Chatswood. They quote you directly. Include your building's access and parking details with the job, because those are often the deciding factors on the lower North Shore.
Does my strata building need the handyman's insurance certificate?
Many do. Strata by-laws and building managers often ask for a copy of the trade's public liability insurance before they can use the lift or work on site, and some ask for a licence number. Check with your building manager, then ask the handyman to send the documents before the visit.
Can a handyman cut back a tree near my fence?
Only after you've checked the rules. Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby, Willoughby, Lane Cove, Mosman and North Sydney councils all protect many trees, and pruning or removing one without approval can bring fines. Check your council's tree rules first. Large pruning is a job for a qualified arborist, not a handyman.
Does a handyman need a licence on the North Shore?
Not for most odd jobs. NSW requires a contractor licence for residential building work worth more than $5,000 including GST, and a licence at any value for electrical, plumbing, drainage, gas and air-con work. Check any licence number on the NSW Government licence check and ask for insurance details.
