Gutter cleaning in the Hills District

Hills District gutters deal with big gardens, bushland reserves and summer storms. Older homes in Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills sit under mature trees, newer estates have rainwater tanks fed by their gutters, and the semi-rural edges are bushfire-prone. Here is how to plan gutter cleaning for your home.

Quick answer

In the Hills District, clean gutters at least before summer storms and the bushfire season, and more often under big trees. On bushfire-prone land around Dural, Glenhaven, Kenthurst and Glenorie, clear gutters are part of basic fire preparation, and if your home has a rainwater tank, ask the cleaner to check the first-flush diverter and tank inlet screen too.

What fills Hills gutters

Older suburbs like Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and West Pennant Hills have mature gardens and street trees, plus bushland reserves along the creeks. Gums drop leaves and bark year round, and many older gardens also have deciduous trees that drop a big load in autumn. Hip roofs on 1980s and 90s homes have valleys that collect leaves before they reach the gutter.

Bushfire-prone land in the Hills

The bushland edges of the Hills, including Dural, Glenhaven, Kenthurst, Glenorie and the Hawkesbury side, are mapped as bushfire-prone. Embers can land in dry leaves in a gutter, which is why the NSW RFS lists clear gutters as basic home preparation. Plan a clean before the Bush Fire Danger Period, which usually starts on 1 October in the Sydney area but can be brought forward.

If you add gutter guard on bushfire-prone land, choose metal mesh. Bushfire construction standards say any gutter guard fitted in a bushfire-prone area must be non-combustible.

Check before you prune. The Hills Shire Council requires consent to prune a tree by more than 10%, and fines for unapproved tree work can be very large. On bushfire-prone land, the NSW RFS 10/50 online tool shows whether you may clear some vegetation near your home.

Rainwater tanks and two-storey homes

Many homes built in the Hills since BASIX started in 2004 have a rainwater tank plumbed to the toilets, laundry or garden. Leaves and silt from the gutters end up at the tank inlet. Ask the cleaner to check and clear the first-flush diverter and inlet screen, and to keep debris out of the downpipes that feed the tank.

Estates in Kellyville, Rouse Hill and Box Hill are full of two-storey homes with narrow side paths. That makes ladder work harder and more dangerous. SafeWork NSW expects anyone working at heights to control the risk of falls, so ask how the cleaner will work safely and whether they carry public liability insurance.

Summer storms in the Hills can dump a lot of rain fast. Blocked gutters overflow into eaves and wall cavities, and blocked valleys push water under the tiles. A clean in late spring is a good habit.

What to tell the crew when you ask for quotes

  • Single or two storey, and the width of the side paths
  • Trees overhanging the roof, and the type if you know it
  • Whether you have a rainwater tank and where it is fed from
  • Any gutter guard already fitted
  • Whether you are on bushfire-prone land

Common questions

How often should I clean my gutters in the Hills?

At least twice a year is a common starting point, and more often if trees overhang the roof. A clean in late spring, before summer storms and the bushfire season, and another after autumn leaf drop suits many Hills homes. Homes on bushland edges may need more frequent checks.

Can I clean my own gutters on a two-storey home?

You can, but falls from ladders and roofs are a common cause of serious injury. Two-storey homes with narrow side paths, common in newer Hills estates, make it harder to set up a ladder safely. A cleaner with the right access equipment and insurance is often the safer choice.

Do I need to clean my rainwater tank screens too?

Yes, it helps. Leaves and silt from the roof collect at the first-flush diverter and inlet screen. If they block, water bypasses the tank or overflows. Ask your gutter cleaner to check them while they are on site, and follow your tank maker's maintenance advice.

Does the 10/50 rule let me clear trees near my house?

Possibly. In the NSW RFS 10/50 entitlement area, you may be able to clear trees within 10 metres of your home and some other vegetation within 50 metres without approval. Not every block qualifies, and the rules have conditions. Check the RFS online tool for your address on the day you plan to clear.
