A few measurements and clear priorities make the first conversation more productive.

Begin with appliances

Record the model and dimensions of the washing machine and dryer, including any clearance requirements in their installation instructions. Note how the doors open and whether you need bench space above or beside them. A useful layout accounts for actual appliances, not a generic cabinet drawing.

Prioritise storage

List detergents, linen, laundry baskets and cleaning equipment. Separate everyday items from occasional storage. Decide whether folding space, hanging space or concealed storage matters most; a small room cannot always maximise all three.

Describe the changes

Say whether plumbing locations stay, whether cabinetry replaces an existing set and whether flooring is part of the work. Include access constraints and apartment requirements. This gives contractors a clearer starting point for a site visit.

Request a complete scope

Ask for the quoted fixtures, cabinet finishes, service connections, removal and making good. The NSW Government’s quote guidance explains why specifying the intended materials matters. Confirm the approval pathway if alterations go beyond a simple replacement scope.
