Quick answer

As of October 2026, spray-on resurfacing of a sound concrete driveway in Sydney costs about $57 to $92 per m², while a new plain concrete driveway costs about $86 to $170 per m², plus $34 to $115 per m² to remove the old slab, according to What's The Damage. ServiceSeeking's July 2026 data puts driveway restoration at an average of $132 per m². Resurfacing only works on a stable slab; sinking, lifting or badly broken concrete usually needs replacing.

Key takeaways
  • Resurfacing puts a thin decorative coating over existing concrete. It refreshes the look but does not fix a slab that is moving or breaking up.
  • Sydney prices (What's The Damage, October 2026): spray-on resurfacing $57 to $92 per m²; new plain driveway $86 to $170 per m²; exposed aggregate $140 to $230 per m²; removal $34 to $115 per m².
  • ServiceSeeking (July 2026) reports an average driveway restoration project of $4,751, or $132 per m².
  • Replace rather than resurface when the slab is sinking, lifting, badly cracked into pieces or draining the wrong way.
  • Work on the council crossing between your boundary and the kerb needs council approval, usually under section 138 of the Roads Act 1993.

What is driveway resurfacing?

Driveway resurfacing means applying a new surface layer over an existing concrete driveway. Concreters clean and repair the slab, then spray, trowel or stencil a thin cement-based or polymer coating over it. It gives an old driveway a new colour and finish without pouring a new slab.

It is one of four main options:

Driveway options compared
OptionWhat it involvesBest for
Cleaning and sealingClean the surface and apply a clear or tinted sealerSound driveways that look tired or stain easily
Crack and patch repairFill or patch cracks and small damaged areasIsolated, stable cracks
Resurfacing (overlay or spray-on)Repair, then cover the slab with a thin decorative coatingSound slabs with surface wear, stains or an outdated look
Full replacementBreak out and remove the slab, fix the base, pour a new drivewaySinking, lifting, broken or badly drained driveways

General guide only. A concreter should inspect the slab before recommending an option.

ServiceSeeking's 2026 data puts the average driveway restoration project at $4,751. It found that two in three quotes are priced per m², while hourly rates are mostly used for small repairs.

We found no reliable 2026 price source for sealing on its own, so ask for it as a separate line on your quote.

Is it cheaper to resurface or replace a driveway?

Resurfacing usually costs less up front, because there is no demolition and no new slab. Using What's The Damage's Sydney figures for a typical 40m² driveway (our arithmetic, not a quote):

  • Spray-on resurfacing at about $57 to $92 per m²: roughly $2,280 to $3,680.
  • New plain concrete driveway: about $3,000 to $6,900, plus about $1,360 to $4,600 to remove the old slab.
  • New exposed aggregate driveway: about $5,500 to $10,350, plus removal.

A new driveway also lets you fix levels, drainage and the base, and choose a fresh finish, while resurfacing keeps whatever is underneath. Resurfacing is only good value if the slab underneath will last. A coating over a moving or broken slab can crack again as the concrete moves, and you may end up paying for replacement anyway.

When does cracking mean the driveway must be replaced?

Fine surface cracks are common in concrete and are often cosmetic. Cracks that are wide, growing, uneven or paired with sinking or lifting point to a problem below the surface, and that usually means replacement.

General guide only. Have a concreter inspect the slab.

Ground movement is a common cause in Sydney. Reactive clay soils, found across much of western Sydney, swell when wet and shrink when dry. Tree roots, poor compaction under the original slab and water running under the edges can also cause sinking and cracking.

How is a concrete driveway resurfaced?

Good resurfacing is mostly preparation. The coating can only bond to a clean, sound surface. A typical job runs like this:

  1. Inspect the slab for movement, drainage problems and hollow or loose areas.
  2. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove oil, dirt, moss and old sealer.
  3. Repair cracks and patch damaged areas, and grind high spots.
  4. Apply a bonding primer, then a base coat of resurfacing material.
  5. Add the finish: a coloured spray-on texture, a stencil pattern or a trowelled coat.
  6. Seal the surface and leave it to cure before walking or driving on it.

Ask how long each stage takes, when you can drive on it, and what the product's maintenance needs are. Control joints in the old slab should be kept or re-cut, because cracks tend to come back where the slab needs to move.

Should you seal a concrete driveway?

Sealing helps protect a sound driveway from oil, tyre marks and water, and keeps decorative finishes looking fresh. Exposed aggregate and stencilled driveways in particular need resealing from time to time, so ask how often the product you choose needs recoating.

Sealing does not fix cracks, sinking or a broken base. It is maintenance, not a repair. On a new driveway, ask your concreter when it is safe to seal.

Do you need council approval to resurface or replace a driveway?

Resurfacing your own driveway on your land usually involves no planning approval, but the council crossing is different. The section between your boundary and the kerb, often called the crossover or layback, is on public land. Building, replacing or changing it needs council approval, usually under section 138 of the Roads Act 1993, and councils set their own design rules.

Fees vary widely by council. What's The Damage lists City of Sydney charges for 2026/27 of a $300 road opening permit, a $1,200 driveway inspection and a $3,320 refundable security deposit. Check your own council's fees before you budget.

Don't let anyone break out or re-pour the crossing without council approval. Councils set the design and inspection rules for crossings, and work done without approval may have to be redone.

Changing the driveway's width, location or levels, or work in a heritage area, may also need approval. Ask your council before committing.

What to ask before you choose

  • Is the slab stable enough to resurface, and how do you know?
  • What product will you use, and what preparation and crack repair is included?
  • How long before we can walk and drive on it?
  • How will water drain away from the house and garage?
  • Does the quote include the council crossing, permits and inspections, or are they excluded?

In NSW, a contractor licence is needed for residential building and trade work worth more than $5,000 including GST (labour and materials). Check the licence on the NSW Government licence check (verify.licence.nsw.gov.au) and make sure the name matches the business on your quote. Jobs over $5,000 including GST need a written contract. The deposit can be no more than 10 per cent. For work over $20,000, the contractor must take out Home Building Compensation cover before taking any money, and you get a five clear business day cooling-off period.

Frequently asked questions

Can you resurface a cracked concrete driveway?

Often, if the cracks are fine and the slab is not moving. The concreter repairs the cracks first, then applies the new surface. If cracks are wide, uneven or still growing, or the slab is sinking or lifting, a coating will not fix the cause and the cracks may come back through it. In that case, replacement is usually better value.

How much does it cost to resurface a 40m² driveway in Sydney?

Using What's The Damage's Sydney spray-on resurfacing range of $57 to $92 per m² (October 2026), a 40m² driveway works out at roughly $2,280 to $3,680 (our arithmetic). Crack repairs, preparation, sealing and minimum job charges can add to it. ServiceSeeking's 2026 average for driveway restoration is $132 per m².

Is asphalt cheaper than concrete for a driveway?

Usually, up front. Airtasker's asphalt guide (March 2025) gives an NSW average of about $45 per m² for a new asphalt driveway, while What's The Damage puts new plain concrete in Sydney at $86 to $170 per m². Asphalt usually needs resealing every few years, and concrete gives more finish options.

Do I need a licensed concreter to resurface a driveway?

In NSW, a contractor licence is needed for residential work worth more than $5,000 including GST, and jobs over that value also need a written contract. Many resurfacing jobs cost less, but a full replacement often costs more. Either way, check the licence on Verify NSW and ask for proof of insurance.

What is the difference between resurfacing and sealing a driveway?

Resurfacing adds a new layer of material over the slab to change its colour and texture and cover wear. Sealing applies a thin protective liquid that soaks in or forms a film to resist stains and water. Sealing is routine maintenance for a sound driveway; resurfacing is a bigger makeover. Neither fixes a sinking or broken slab.
